In South Africa 14 million people go hungry daily. Yet, one third of all food produced in this country (10 million tons) is wasted and ends up in landfill every year. Established in 2009 to address widespread hunger in South Africa, FoodForward SA (formerly FoodBank SA), an NPO, connects a world of excess to a world of need by recovering quality edible surplus food from food retailers, manufacturers and farmers and distributing it to community organisations that serve vulnerable people. Our mission is to reduce hunger by safely and cost-effectively securing quality food, and making it available to those who need it. FoodForward SA currently has a physical presence in six cities across SA (Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Johannesburg, Rustenburg, Bloemfontein). We provide food to 530 registered beneficiary organisations (over 200,000 people) whose core focus is early childhood development, the elderly, vulnerable women, skills development, and community feeding.
